My First Pocket PC Application, Hello World!

  1. Startup Visual Stidio .NET 2003
  2. Choose Smart Device Application from the New Project dialog box.
  3. Enter PPCHelloWorld for the project name.
  4. Click on OK.
  5. Set What platform do you want to target? to Pocket PC and What project type do you want to create? to Windows Application.
  6. Click on OK.
  7. Click on the mainMenu1 control icon toward the bottom then click on the menu item box toward the bottom of the Pocket PC form window then type Hello World!.
  8. Double-click on the Hello World! menu to create a click event handler then type in the following code: MessageBox.Show("Hello World!");. The event handler method should like like this: private void menuItem1_Click(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { MessageBox.Show("Hello World!"); }
  9. Press the F5 key to test the application.
  10. Choose Pocket PC Emulator 2002.
  11. Click on Deploy (it will take a while so be patient).
  12. Test the application by clicking on the Hello World! menu at the bottom of the app.
  13. Close the Pocket PC 2002 window.
  14. Choose Turn off emulator (otherwise you may not be able to test it again - a sharing violation may occur) from the drop-down menu.
